Pycnodonts were an extinct group of ray-finned fishes recognized for their deep, disk-shaped bodies and powerful crushing teeth. Tepexichthys aranguthyorum is considered one of the more distinctive members of this group because of its highly compressed body shape and specialized jaw structure.
