Description

Kiaeraspis auchenaspidoides Stensio
Lower Devonian
Dickson Fjord, Spitzbergen, Norway

Two 27mm head shields on 88mm matrix. Extremely rare.

Kiaeraspis is a genus of cephalaspid fish known from the Early Devonian of Europe. Cephalaspids were armored jawless fishes of the extinct Class Osteostraci at a time when jawed fishes had already appeared and were becoming dominant in the seas. Generally, the only remains of this group that have been found are isolated head shields.

Here’s a matrix piece with not one but two head shields on it. Great find for a fossil fish collector looking for something representative of the Age of Fishes.

Isn’t it rich, Norwegian fish.
