Unlike later, more familiar arthropods, Meristosoma belonged to a diverse assemblage of early marine animals that display body plans rarely seen after the Cambrian. Fossils of this type provide valuable insight into the rapid diversification of arthropods during the earliest stages of complex animal evolution.
