Description
Edingerella Madagascarensis
Early Triassic
Isalo Formation
Ambilobe, Madagascar.
Unusual 99mm temnospondyl amphibian skull with some skin impressions in 116mm paired concretion.
Edingerella was a primitive temnospondyl amphibian that lived during the Early Triassic period, over 245 million years ago. With a broad, flat skull and strong limbs, it likely hunted in swamps and rivers, preying on fish and small animals. As an early relative of modern amphibians, Edingerella bridges the gap between ancient aquatic tetrapods and later land dwellers. Small but fierce, it was part of the great amphibian recovery after Earth’s largest mass extinction.
