Description

Jellyfish
Late Jurassic
Solnhofen Limestone
Eichstadt Germany
Rare, enormous 250mm jellyfish on huge 505mm plate

Jellyfish, Soft-bodied. Cnidarian. Cnidaria.

The super fine-grained limestones in the area of Solnhofen, Germany allowed for the preservation of the feather imprints of what was considered the earliest-known bird. It turns out the rock preserves even more delicate organic structures such as the muscles of a horseshoe crab and the body of a jellyfish.

Jellyfish are quite uncommon even at Solnhofen and this one is even larger than another one we have. The thing about fossil jellyfish in general is the smaller ones tend to preserve better than the larger ones so the smaller ones are what tend to be found. This one would be a great specimen for those who want not only a fossil jellyfish but what would be considered a giant one.
