Dickinsonia costata is one of the most iconic organisms of the Ediacaran biota, a group of early multicellular life forms that existed before the Cambrian explosion. Its biological classification has been widely studied and is generally interpreted as a soft bodied, quilted organism, possibly related to early animal life or an extinct evolutionary experiment in multicellularity.
