Description
Hyracodon sp.
Middle Oligocene
White River Formation
Converse County, Wyoming, USA
Big 16 inch rhino jaw section full of teeth
Hyracodon was an extinct three-toed rhinoceros relative that lived in North America and Asia during the Oligocene Epoch, roughly 37–26 million years ago. Hyracodon was a member of Rhinocerotoidea, the group containing modern rhinoceroses and their extinct relatives. It was a relatively slender, long-legged rhinoceros, quite different from the heavy, barrel-shaped rhinos alive today. Different species varied considerably in size, but some were approximately horse-sized, with others smaller.
