Description

Pirania muricata and Takakkawia lineata

Cambrian

Burgess Shale, Stephens Formation

Field, British Columbia, BC Canada.

Very rare 90mm slab with two different sponges – 23mm Pirania and 18mm Takakkawia.

Association.

Pirania is a sponge best known from the Middle Cambrian Burgess Shale.  It has also been found in the Early Ordovician of Morocco which reveals much wider stratigraphic and paleogeographic ranges.

Takakkawia is another sponge but it’s known only from the Burgess Shale so far.

This is an unusual association piece – two genera of sponges.
