Description

Dunkleosteus terrelli jaw CAST
Devonian
Cleveland Shale
Cleveland, OH USA.

Huge 530mm (21 inch) cast of the lower jaw of one of the largest known armored fishes.

Dunkleosteus was the largest animal of its time, reaching a length of perhaps 30 feet and belonged to the Class Placodermi, the placoderms, aka the jawed armored fishes.  It was in every kid’s paleontology book often seen chasing sharks.

Dunkleosteus is known only from fossilized head/body armor bones and tooth plates.  The tooth plates worked together like a self-sharpening guillotine chopping even large prey into bite-size pieces. Fifty percent larger than the great white sharks of our day, it was one of the nightmare predators of all time.

Casts are affordable visual aids to fossil collectors, museum curators, and science teachers.  They are not just random models.  They are life-size copies of actual fossils professionally molded and painted for use as scientific references and display pieces.

Also not just a random model, here’s the lovely Tiffany Case providing scale for the jaw cast.
