Ceratarges zirgensis and Proetus Sp.
Middle Devonian

47mm Ceratarges and 24mm Proetus on 135mm slab.
ceratarges and Proetus sp. are two distinct and fascinating trilobites from the Devonian period, showcasing the diversity of this ancient arthropod group.
Ceratarges is known for its elaborate spines and horn-like projections, likely used for defense or to deter predators. Its dramatic appearance makes it one of the most visually striking trilobites.
Proetus sp., in contrast, had a smoother, more compact body with fewer spines. It was one of the last surviving trilobite groups, showing how streamlined design helped it persist until the end of the Paleozoic.
Together, they highlight the evolutionary range of trilobites—from ornate to efficient—in Earth’s prehistoric seas.
