Description

Synechodus lerichei
Late Cretaceous (Santonian)
Tyx-Butak, Kazakhstan

10mm x 8mm tooth of a synechodontiform shark.

Synechodontiforms are a poorly understood branch of the shark family considered by some researchers to be a stem group on the lineage to modern sharks, while others argue they are crown group galeomorphs. No matter what they are, they are extinct and cool.
