Echinoderm-Camptostroma roddyi
Early Cambrian
york, Pennsylvania
39mm extremely rare echinoderm on 70mm slab
Camptostroma roddyi is a rare and unusual echinoderm from the Cambrian period, known for its distinctive star-shaped body and central dome. Once mistaken for a jellyfish, this fossil is now recognized as one of the earliest echinoderms, related to modern sea stars and sea urchins. Its unique structure reflects a time when life was rapidly diversifying into new body plans. Exceptionally preserved, Camptostroma roddyi is a window into the early evolution of echinoderms—and a true rarity from Earth’s ancient oceans.
