Description
Tertremetoides madagascarensis
Early Triassic
Isalo Formation
Ambilobe, Madagascar.
Big 430mm concretion with near complete skeleton of a Triassic amphibian. Extremely rare this large and complete. Easily the best we have ever had.
Tertremetoides was a primitive temnospondyl amphibian that lived during the Early Triassic period, over 245 million years ago. With a broad, flat skull and strong limbs, it likely hunted in swamps and rivers, preying on fish and small animals. As an early relative of modern amphibians, Tertremetoides bridges the gap between ancient aquatic tetrapods and later land dwellers. Small but fierce, it was part of the great amphibian recovery after Earth’s largest mass extinction.
