Description

Thrausmosaurus serratidens
Lower Permian
Admiral Formation
Richard’s Spur, Fort Sill, Comanche County, Oklahoma.

14mm jaw section with 4 teeth.

Reptile, Synapsid. Pelycosaur.

Thrausmosaurus is an early synapsid genus that co-existed with its larger and more famous relatives, Dimetrodon and Edaphosaurus (sites in Oklahoma and Texas). Early synapsids used to be called “pelycosaurs” but that term has fallen mostly out of usage.  They looked like reptiles but they represent a separate lineage that led to mammals.  They included the top carnivores and herbivores of the Permian as they became better-adapted to fully-terrestrial environments during a time of warmer and drier climates.

Nice jaw with killer teeth.
