Description

Early Eocene
London Clay
Isle of Sheppey, Kent, England
Very large, very unusual 80mm pyritized starfish.

Asteroid. Echinoderm.

Coulonia is a genus of starfish known from the Cretaceous to Eocene of Europe.

There are two known genera of starfish and one undetermined taxon in the London Clay. They are generally found as pyrite casts of isolated arms or two connected partial arms. This is one is nearer to completeness than I have ever seen before from the London Clay with the five arms still present at least in part.

Incredibly rare find. A London Clay collector will probably bag this one.
